HACKING SPOTIFY
BY QBIT
Trying to break out into the music scene can be challenging when up against a huge number of other talented creatives trying to do the same thing! But these days with social media having such a powerful influence in the scene, it’s also easier than it’s ever been before. There are two main areas to focus on for anyone who’s struggling or wants to put themselves out there: Networking and Marketing.
Networking:
· Start locally, these can be societies, event organisers and even messaging other local artists on Instagram! A little local research can go a long way. It’s much easier to start locally than to try and take on the country, let alone the world…
· Build up a network of other artists you can work with and critique each other’s work. Multiple brains are better than one! I’ve learned more than ever by working with others.
· Don’t be afraid to send your tracks and mixes to promoters and labels and embrace rejection. The biggest mistake I made early on was letting myself get down when I had demos rejected. Ask for feedback and use this information as a guide to improve!
Marketing:
· Treat your work as your product. One of the crucial things I recognised early on was taking advantage of modern distributors such as DistroKid and getting my music into the hands of everyone: Spotify. Unfortunately, these days interest in other platforms such as SoundCloud is on the decline, so making your catalogue available easily is vital and Spotify is the most important of them all.
· Attention to detail is key. Your Instagram page is your storefront, if you don’t have a camera of your own, ask to borrow a friend's or even ask if they would be willing to help capture higher-quality content for your profile! Consistent, high-quality content stands out from the crowd and only requires dedicating slightly more time.
Most importantly enjoy the journey and good luck! :)
